How to Play
Goal
Be the first to play all your tiles each round. The player with the lowest total pip count after 13 rounds wins the game.
Setup
Each round begins with a central engine tile. Round 1 starts with the double-12, and the engine counts down one value per round, ending with the double-0 in round 13. Each player is dealt 15 tiles; the rest form the boneyard.
Your Turn
On your turn, play one tile onto an eligible train:
Your own personal train — yours to build, starts at the engine
The Mexican Train — a shared train anyone can play on
Any opponent’s “open” train — see below
The tile you play must have one half matching the train’s open end. If a train is empty, your first tile must include the engine value.
Doubles
Playing a double (like 7-7) is special — you earn an immediate bonus play. You must play another tile matching the double’s value onto that same train to “satisfy” it. If you can’t, you draw from the boneyard. If still unable, your train is marked open.
Active Doubles
An unsatisfied double freezes the game. The next player must address it — playing a matching tile on that same train, drawing, or marking their own train open. The double remains active (pulsing red) until someone matches it.
Can’t Play?
If you can’t play any tile, draw one from the boneyard. If the drawn tile creates a valid play, you must play it. Otherwise, your train is marked open and your turn ends.
Open Trains
When your train is open, any other player can play on it — opponents will dump unwanted tiles there. You can close your train again by playing on it yourself on a future turn.
Round End & Scoring
The round ends when someone empties their hand — or when everyone is blocked. Each player counts the pip total of their remaining tiles, and that’s added to their cumulative score. Lower is better.
Winning the Game
After 13 rounds (engines counting down from 12-12 to 0-0), the player with the lowest total score wins.
Tips for Winning
Dump high-pip tiles early. A 12-12 left in your hand at round end is 24 points against you.
Keep your train closed. Once it opens, opponents will pile on it.
Don’t play unsatisfied doubles. If you can’t follow it up, you’ll be forced to draw and possibly open your train.
Use the Mexican Train strategically — it’s a safe place to play unwanted tiles.
Watch opponent open ends. Knowing what they need to match can help you predict where they’ll struggle.
